Canberra bolstered its playoff hopes by topping Geelong-Korea 6-4 in their Brut Australian Baseball League round six opener at MIT Narrabundah Ballpark on Thursday night.

The Cavs improved their record to 10-11, which keeps them knocking on the door of the North-East Division top two, while GK (4-17) is still cemented to dead last in their division following the loss.

Canberra took control of the contest in a decisive seventh inning, piling on three runs.

With backs against the wall with two out, the Cavs exploded with Padres prospect Justin Lopez finding home plate after a line drive single by David Kandilas.

Michael Fransoso then scored for the home team on Craig Massey's single, before defensive miscommuncation allowed Zach Wilson's fly ball drop in centrefield to score a third run.

Earlier, Geelong-Korea sprung to 3-0 lead with runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings.

Seung-Hun Kim's RBI-single opened the scoring for GK, plating Kwang-Min Kwon (walk) with two outs in the second.

Kim drove in his second run with a fourth-inning double.

Canberra then fought back to tie the ball game, scoring two runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth.

Cam Warner homered on a fly ball to centre field after Robbie Perkins singled, bringing the hosts within a run.

Massey added a run to level the scores in the bottom of the sixth on Wilson's single to centre field.

Geelong-Korea made a last ditch effort at the top of the ninth to prolong the game when Dong-Gyun Woo added an RBI-single.

But it was not enough for the visitors to avoid defeat.

Cavs' starter Steven Kent steadied after allowing three early runs to strike out eight in seven innings.

Tomoya Mikami avoided danger to collect his third save of the season.

Canberra and Geelong-Korea will continue their series on Friday, with the first pitch scheduled for 7pm.
