Canberra kept alive its hopes of hosting a home semi-final series in the 2019 Playoffs presented by Boral with a 5-2 victory over Perth in the Brut Australian Baseball League on Friday night.
The Cavs, in a hard-fought battle with Sydney and Brisbane for the North-East Division title, got off to a fast start.
A Kyle Perkins homer to right field, which also allowed his brother Robbie to score, gave Canberra a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
In a low-scoring opening, there were no more runs added until the sixth inning, when the Cavs extended their lead to 3-0.
A ground ball RBI to Kyle Perkins brought Michael Crouse to home plate to register a run.
The Heat strongly replied at the top of the eighth, adding two runs, however failed to take the lead when they left the bases loaded.
Chris Clare recorded Perth's first run of the night on a throwing error from Michael Fransoso, with Pete Kozma further narrowing the deficient on a Robbie Glendinning double.
However, when it looked like all the momentum was swinging the Heat's way, back-to-back home runs to Michael Crouse and Boss Moanaroa shut down any chance of a Perth comeback.
Canberra will be closely monitoring the results of Brisbane this weekend, with the Bandits holding a better head-to-head record, the Cavalry will need to register a greater final round of the season to leapfrog the Queenslander's into second position.
Saturday will see a doubleheader between Perth and Canberra, with the rain-suspended series opener to to resume at 4pm (with the Heat ahead 2-0), while a seven-inning game will commence at 7pm.
